Question
Revised Quick Start Card for Transfer Your PC
Answer
QUICK START CARD
STEP 1
PREPARING FOR THE MIGRATION
Completing the steps below prior to migration will ensure that your systems are ready for the
transfer process.
If you need additional instructions, please see your Transfer Your PC User Guide.
Please do not connect the cable until prompted to do so in these instructions.
- Uninstall or delete any items or programs on the old computer that you don’t want to transfer
to the new computer.
- If you have any applications installed on the New computer that are different versions from the
ones installed on the Old computer, uninstall one of them.
- Disable Power-Saving Options and Screen Savers. (You’ll find these in the Control Panel.) This
will keep the computer from shutting down during the transfer.
- Make sure that both computers are plugged into a power source. This will keep the computer from
shutting down while you are using batteries.
- Run a full system virus scan on both computers, either using your already installed anti-virus
application or one of the free online scanners.
- Run Scan Disk.
- Under
Windows 95, 98 or Me:
Click on the Start menu and choose Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools ->
ScanDisk.
Choose the option labeled Standard and check the Automatically Fix Errors box. Then click
Start.

- Under
Windows 2000, XP, or Vista:
Double-click My Computer and right-click your hard drive. Then select Properties from the
pop-up menu. Click the Tools tab in the Properties window.
Click the Check Now button and then indicate that you want file system errors fixed
automatically. When the procedure is complete, restart your computer.

- Perform a Disk Cleanup. This will remove temporary files that you do not wish to transfer from
your old computer. Just choose Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Cleanup
from the Start menu.
- Close all applications on both computers.
STEP 2
PREPARING YOUR NEW COMPUTER
The migration starts with the New computer.
- Insert the Transfer Your PC CD into your CD drive on the New computer. Follow the on-screen
instructions to install Transfer Your PC. (If nothing happens after inserting the CD-ROM, go to My
Computer, open the drive that contains the CD and double click setup.exe.)
- Once Transfer Your PC is installed, plug the USB cable to the New computer. It is recommended
to plug the cable directly into the computer (do not use a hub) using one of the available ports on
the back of the computer. If the Found New Hardware wizard comes up, then simply click Next thru
the wizard until it completes and installs the driver.
- Launch Transfer Your PC on the New computer and follow the on-screen instructions until you are
no longer able to click Next.
STEP 3
PREPARING YOUR OLD COMPUTER
- Insert the Transfer Your PC CD into your CD drive on the Old computer. Follow the on-screen
instructions to install Transfer Your PC. (If nothing happens after inserting the CD-ROM, go to My
Computer, open the drive that contains the CD and double click setup.exe.)
- Once Transfer Your PC is installed, plug the USB cable to the Old computer. It is recommended

the back of the computer. If the Found New Hardware wizard comes up, then simply click Next thru
the wizard until it completes and installs the driver.
- Launch Transfer Your PC on the Old computer.
- Transfer Your PC will prompt you for a serial number. You will find this on the CD sleeve that
contained the Transfer Your PC CD-ROM. If you are having problems with the validation process, you
can follow the directions in this
FAQ 213 or see
page 3 of your Transfer Your PC User Guide.
STEP 4
TRANSFER YOUR FILES TO YOUR NEW PC
