What does Modem Initialization String Failed mean? How do I stop this message?
Cause
This message indicates that an IRQ (Interrupt ReQuest) conflict exists between COM1 and COM3 or
COM2 and COM4, or there is an unsupported command in the modem's initialization string.
Solution
Note: These steps assume that the mouse works in LapLink V/DOS. If it does not,
use ALT and the highlighted letter. TAB and the Arrow keys will move the cursor around the dialogs.
To check for an IRQ conflict, disable the opposing COM port that is enabled for LapLink V. For
example, if the modem is set to COM3, disable COM1, or if the modem is set for COM4 disable COM2.
Here are the steps to do this:
- From LapLink's
Options menu, click
Port/Modem Setup.
- Highlight the port you wish to disable (the port should show as
Enabled), and press
Enter.
- Type
E to remove the X from Enable Port.
- Click
OK.
- Highlight the modem port, and press
Enter.
- Type
S to go to Serial Port Settings.
- Verify that the modem serial port settings are set to the modem's
actual baud rate instead of Automatic.
-
Note: If the baud rate is not listed, click
38400.
- Click
OK, and then
Done.
- Attempt to dial the modem.
If the message is still displayed when dialing the modem, check to see if there is a command
in the initialization string that is causing the failure. To do this, send a BLANK initialization
string to the modem. A blank initialization string in LapLink forces the modem to use its own
internal default settings. Here are the steps to do this:
- From LapLink's
Options menu, click
Port/Modem Setup.
- Highlight the modem port, and press
Enter.
- Click
User Customized.
- Confirm that the Initialization string field is empty.
- Confirm that
Tone Dial is selected unless the phone line uses a pulse dial.
- Click
OK and then
Done.
- Attempt to dial the modem.
- If the modem dials and connects, leave the string blank.
