How does PCsync work?

PCsync creates a connection to another computer over a cable, LAN or the Internet. Once connected, you can use your favorite method to carry out your task: drag and drop, program menus or right-click menus. PCsync's wizards help you make connections and migrate files and settings to your new computer.

The Explorer-like interface is divided into four sections called panes, which help you make the connection, locate files on the drive or folder of the computer you're connected to and locate drives and folders on your local computer. The Smart Xchange™ feature helps to automate common file transfers, and SpeedSync™ technology speeds up file synchronization by transferring only the changed portion of files between computers.

What is PCMover?

PCsync's PCMover™ allows you to migrate your computer's files and personality so you don't have to waste time recreating them on your new PC. Migrate all your files; your desktop, network, and operating system settings; browser settings and Outlook settings.

With PCMover you can migrate the files and settings from 45 of the most popular PC software applications. Your computer's entire personality and files move with you when you use PCMover.

Why doesn't PCMover migrate full applications?

The migration of full applications is not a good idea because most major applications are not compatible across operating systems. Even if applications work on multiple OS platforms, they are installed in very different ways depending on the operating system. In these cases, it is better to completely re-install the application on the second computer.

Or, if your second computer comes with a newer OS, it is highly likely that newer versions of major applications also came pre-installed on the PC. In this case, you don't need to move the applications themselves – just the settings, which PCMover does for you.

How do I connect to my home computer using Surf Up?

To use the Surf Up feature, first set up your computer name, username, and password in PCsync's Share My Computer feature on your home computer. This allows you to access your Shared Folder from any computer that has Internet access.

When you're away from home and want to Surf Up, visit www.laplink.com/surfup. (Note: your home computer must be connected to the Internet and running PCsync.)

You are prompted to enter your unique computer name so that Surf Up can locate your PC. Once located, you are prompted to enter your username and password, then Surf Up displays the list of folders and files that are in your PCsync Shared Folder. From there, you can place or retrieve your important files on either the remote or local computer.

Are connections over the Internet secure?

You can configure PCsync to use secure SSL connections when sharing folders over the Internet.

Connections to other PCsync users over the Internet are secure if the user sets up an SSL connection within PCsync. This is useful when sharing sensitive data with others. However, a secure connection runs significantly slower than an unsecured connection.

Note: User names and passwords are always encrypted when using PCsync over the Internet.

What is "synchronizing"?

Often files are transferred between PCs, and then updated on one computer but not the other. Synchronization with LapLink products uses SpeedSync™ (delta file transfer technology) to transfer only the changed portion of files, which ensures that the most current version of a file is on both PCs. Because SpeedSync only updates the changed portion of files instead of synching a full file, this also saves you time.

Within PCsync, you create a specific synchronization between PCs, called a SmartXchange™, which you can run immediately or save to run at a later time. You can set up multiple SmartXchanges within PCsync. When you want to synchronize files, you simply run the SmartXchange. The most current version of the file(s) now resides on both machines.

Why should I buy PCsync when the Microsoft Windows XP offers many of the same features?

There are several reasons to purchase PCsync when comparing it to Windows XP. First, PCsync is available today; It allows the user to migrate files and settings across all released versions of Windows, including Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me. Second, Windows XP cannot make your files available to you over the Internet form a web browser like the PCsync Surf Up feature can. Thirdly, PCsync is an essential utility for the home user and small business customer. It not only provides a robust personality migration solution; but it also offers file transfer and synchronization for ongoing file management. And lastly, PCsync offers the complete hardware and software solution necessary for file migration and file transfer. PCsync includes a serial cable and an optional USB cable, which transfers up to 5 Mbps, over three times faster than a T1 circuit.
