Configuring a NETGEAR Cable/DSL Router for use with LapLink

SUMMARY

I have a NETGEAR Cable/DSL router. How can I configure the router to allow LapLink connections from the Internet?

SOLUTION

You must configure the router to forward port 1547 to the Laplink host computer. NetGear brand routers use a web interface to configure the router.

Note 1: These configurations do not apply to local area network (LAN) connections between Laplink computers attached to the router. LAN connections do not traverse the router’s NAT (Network Address Translation) functions. See Technical Document # 99: How to Install and Configure LapLink for Your First Local Area Network (LAN) Connection for additional information.

Note 2: You cannot connect two Laplink computers over the Internet through the same Internet connection, since they will share the same public IP address. If you are testing this connection before going on the road, please use our Live Chat support. Laplink technicians can remotely test the connection for you. Before contacting a technician for testing, you must work through the steps below under: Forwarding Port 1547.

Note 3: The steps below allow only one LapLink host computer to be accessible from the Internet.

Note 4: Most routers are configured to dynamically assign IP addresses to each attached computer. This means when a computer boots up its IP address may change, which will prevent LapLink connections because the router will be forwarding LapLink traffic to the incorrect IP address. To avoid such problems, we recommend that the LapLink host computer be assigned a static IP address and excluded from the function of dynamic address assignment by the router. For more information, view your router's documentation or contact the hardware manufacturer for assistance.

Forwarding Port 1547:

  1. Obtain the private (LAN) IP address of the Laplink host computer. See Technical Document 204: How to Determine the IP Address on a Computer for more information.
  2. Point your browser to http://192.168.0.1 on your local network to access the router.
  3. Provide the username & password for the router.
  4. Go to Advanced under Port Forwarding.
  5. Click on Add Custom Service.
  6. Add the following services:
Service NameStart PortEnd PortServer IP Address
LapLink15471547192.168.0.2 (example only. Obtain your own LAN IP address)

  7. Save the changes and close out of the utility.
  8. If you encounter difficulty configuring the router, please contact the hardware manufacturer here: NETGEAR Technical Support.

Once the port forwarding has been accomplished, you are ready to connect in Laplink from a different location. Please see Technical Document # 201: Using ILS to Connect over the Internet with LapLink.
